5 Airborne Allergens in Home that can Cause Health Issues

By The Air Purifier

The Air in your home is probably much dirtier than the air outside, regardless of where you live. According to the EPA, the typical air in your home is one of the top Environmental Hazards.

A high level of Allergens in your home can lead to AllergiesAsthmaCold/Flu VirusesSinus Infections & Respiratory Illnesses.

Types of Allergens

  • Bacteria & Viruses
  • Dust Mites
  • Mold Spores
  • Pet Dander
  • Pollen

1Bacteria / Viruses

Bacteria can be spread through respiratory droplets when someone sneezes, coughs or exhales in some way. Viruses can also be spread by small droplets in the air through runny noses, coughing and exhaling.

When you breath in these pathogens you can be infected and some of these pathogens are dangerous and can causes diseases.

2. Dust Mites

According to the AAFA (Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America), around 20 million Americans are allergic to dust mites, meaning they're one of the most common triggers of allergies and asthma. Dust mites are tiny creatures, invisible to the naked eye.

While most people experience only mild symptoms from dust-mite allergies (itching nose and eyes, sneezing), for some people with severe asthma or other respiratory problems, it could mean life or death.

Note: You can Avoid Health Issues if your Allergy is Detected & Treated.

3. Mold Spores

If you have an allergy to mold, its presence in your home can make you feel sick. More importantly, it is mold spores that can have a negative impact on your health. The symptoms triggered by mold exposure can vary from person to person.

Mold releases spores, which can become airborne and inhaled into the lungs of person(s) living in the home. Some spores produce mycotoxins, or toxic compounds. Mycotoxins on mold spores have been linked to serious health problems and disease.

Like all living things, mold needs humidity, food and oxygen to survive. Look for groups of small dark spots on walls, ceilings or floors, especially in corners and nooks. Mold loves the dark, moist conditions behind pictures and draperies, under windowsills, in books and in tile grout.

4. Pet Dander

Pet Dander can cause problems with people prone to airborne allergies. Saliva and Urine can also cause problems.  Dander is dead skin cells that you’re pet sheds and can be compared to dandruff in humans.

People with overactive immune systems can have a reaction to the proteins secreted by the glands on the animal’s skin surface. This protein can also be present in their Saliva and Urine.

5. Pollen

Pollen season can be a miserable time for those with hay fever. Whether you're allergic to just one type of pollen, such as grass pollen, or react to several types of pollen during the main pollen-release period, you likely have to spend most of the summer indoors. However, you don't get away from pesky pollen altogether by simply closing your windows and doors.

Pollen sticks to pet hair and clothing, and it can also enter your home through small gaps around your door frame and windows. Once it's in your home, pollen drifts in the air. But there are steps you can take to remove it.

Anyone of these Allergens on this list could trigger an Allergy. If your allergy problems are more chronic then something like air purification might be your solution.
