Are You Allergic to Pet Dander

By The Air Purifier

When you own a dog or cat there are always pluses and minuses like unconditional love, companionship, humor but on the minus side there is health issues that your pet will have no matter what you do. This issue in particular is a tough one because this could be your family’s pet. You or your family member could be allergic to your pet but it doesn’t mean you have to get rid of them.

What Causes the Allergy?

Pet Dander can cause problems with people prone to airborne allergies. Saliva and Urine can also cause problems.  Dander is dead skin cells that you’re pet sheds and can be compared to dandruff in humans. People with overactive immune systems can have a reaction to the proteins secreted by the glands on the animal’s skin surface. This protein can also be present in their Saliva and Urine.

Animals like humans produce this oily substance (sebum) from the sebaceous glands to keep skin moist and hair shiny. When these particles become airborne through brushing and petting your animal and breathed in, that is when allergic reactions can happen.

Pet Allergy Symptoms

There are many problems that can surface pertaining to pet allergies. Here are few below (1).

  • Sneezing
  • Running or Stuffy Nose
  • Nasal Congestion and Pain
  • Watery and Itchy Eyes
  • Skin rash or hives
  • Coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath

Hypoallergenic Dogs

People seem to be more allergic to Cats than Dogs. The problem is all dogs (animals) produce sebum oil from their sebaceous glands. But not all dogs will have dander to spread through the air.

The older the dog gets the more sebum they produce because their skin is getting dryer, so when you buy a puppy you might not have any reaction to them at first because they are not producing very much sebum because their skin is already moist. Try buying a dog that sheds less hair and dander.

Pet Allergy Solutions

One way is to use a furnace filter that have a MERV rating of 11 or higher. The higher the MERV rating the more particulate that will be taken out of the air like pet dander, mold spores and dust mites. If your furnace isn’t strong enough to push the air through these filters 24/7, try getting a portable hepa air purifier.

They work fairly well and so do hepa vacuum cleaners. Your rugs and tables need to be vacuumed and dusted with your hepa vacuum on a regularly basis if you start showing any signs of allergies to your pet. If you love them it’s worth it.

Conclusion

If you have an over reactive immune system then getting a dog that produces less or no dander is the way to go. You can very easily find a dog that is less prone to dander by taking a Google search.

It will be more difficult if you have bought you pet already and have recently become allergic to them. Try using the solutions above like changing your furnace filters every 2 months and using a Hepa Air Purifier and Vacuum.
