Nasal Congestion Relief

Top 10 Natural Remedies for Nasal Congestion

By The Air Purifier

Having a cold can be miserable, but having a sinus infection, also called sinusitis, can be much worse. Sinusitis can be the result of fungal, bacterial, or viral infections, so while you might not be able to prevent it, there are some treatment options available.

If you are looking for a way to treat or manage your sinus infection without medical intervention, the following natural remedies can be useful.

1. Saline Solution

Saltwater is the perfect accompaniment for your neti pot. Your neti pot should have come with an instructional guide, but here's a quick rundown. Standing over your sink, tilt your head to the side and pour your saline solution into your "top" nostril and let it empty through the lower one. Repeat three times in each nostril.

To make the saline solution, mix 1/2 glass of warm water, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda. Once you have combined the ingredients thoroughly, add a 1/2 glass of room-temperature water. Before filling your neti pot, ensure that the water is not too hot.

As when you're treating any other illness, you'll want to get plenty of rest, drink lots of fluids, take warm showers and baths, and avoid alcohol and anything to which you might be allergic.

Of course, if you're sick for more than just a couple of days or if your symptoms keep getting worse, you should talk to your doctor. And you should do that anyway before trying out home remedies, especially those with which you're unfamiliar or inexperienced.

2. Green Tea

Although not a new entry to the home remedy scene, green tea continues being an effective remedy for sinusitis. With its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, it helps you get over your sinus infection quickly. Try to drink at least 2 cups every day that you're not feeling well.

3. Hot Compress

Heat can provide a huge relief if you're suffering from facial pain associated with sinus infections. Just soak a washcloth in hot water, squeeze out all the excess, and then put the washcloth on your forehead for quick and simple relief.

4. Basil Leaves

If you've had joint pain, you've probably already discovered the joys of basil's anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. When it comes to sinuses, though, the herb will help to drain the mucus out of your nasal passages.

Like any good tea, start by putting the washed basil leaves into either hot water or a kettle. Steep it for until the leaves adequately infuse the liquid. Then drain the tea into a cup and sip on it over the course of the day.

5. Peppermint Tea

Peppermint tea will give you a refreshing cooling sensation. To achieve this, all you have to do is add 1 or 2 teaspoons of peppermint leaves to hot water or a kettle. Steep the leaves for anywhere between three and five minutes; place the sieve directly into your cup and enjoy the tea.

To make the tea, boil fenugreek seeds in a single cup of water. Make at least three times a day and drink a full glass each time.

Because of the potentiality for side effects, you should speak with your doctor before trying fenugreek seeds or tea.

7. Oregano Oil

Oregano is full of healing properties, making the oil ideal for curing sinus infections. Add a few drops of oregano oil to boiling water. Once you've removed the pot from the heat, inhale the steam. Do this twice a day to feel better more quickly.

8. Carom Seeds

Carom seeds help dilute your mucus, thereby making breathing easier. There are two recommended ways you can use carom seeds to get relief from your sinus infection.

  • Option 1: Boil water and add crushed carom seeds. Breathe in the steam.
  • Option 2: Wrap crushed or whole seeds in a cloth or satchel and hang them near your face (or from a necklace). This method is great for clearing your nasal passages while you're sleeping.

9. Carrot Juice

Carrot juice is not only accessible and delicious, but it also is an excellent natural remedy for your sinuses. Enjoy a glass of carrot juice in the morning every day that you are sick. You'll get a massive boost of vitamin A and feel better faster. You can drink carrot juice alone or combined with other natural remedies on this list.

10. Acupressure

Acupressure can also help with your sinusitis or sinus infection and doesn't involve any needles like with acupuncture. You can either go to a professional or do this at home. Put your fingertips on either side of your nose where your eyebrows meet and apply gentle pressure. Viola! You'll get relief from sinus pain.
