4 Types of Filters for Home Air Purification

By The Air Purifier

There are several air purification technologies on the market today and choosing the right one(s) is a matter of understanding how each type works and what contaminants each one can remove.

Four main types of are Mechanical filters, Electronic cleaners, Gas Phase (Charcoal) air filters and UVGI cleaners. Plus four other technologies.

1. Mechanical Filters (HEPA)

These air cleaners work by trapping particles in their HEPA filters which stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air. When choosing an hepa air filter, look at the MERV rating. MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value), indicates the size and percentage of particles that will be removed from the air.

Higher MERV ratings mean a better filter. Those rated 13 to 16 on the MERV scale will remove 98 percent of particles as small as .03 microns, such as bacteria, while a rating of 17 to 20 means that 99.9 percent of particles smaller than .03 microns will effectively be trapped, including viruses and combustion smoke.

For people looking to improve the quality of the air within their home, using a HEPA Air Purifier is an excellent option. After all, dirty air can cause health issues for you, especially if you already have asthma or allergies.
