4 Types of Filters for Home Air Purification!

There are several air purification technologies on the market today and choosing the right one(s) is a matter of understanding how each type works and what contaminants each one can remove.

Four main types of are Mechanical filters, Electronic cleaners, Gas Phase (Charcoal) air filters and UVGI cleaners. Plus four other technologies.

1. Mechanical Filters (HEPA)

These air cleaners work by trapping particles in their HEPA filters which stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air. When choosing an hepa air filter, look at the MERV rating. MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value), indicates the size and percentage of particles that will be removed from the air.

Higher MERV ratings mean a better filter. Those rated 13 to 16 on the MERV scale will remove 98 percent of particles as small as .03 microns, such as bacteria, while a rating of 17 to 20 means that 99.9 percent of particles smaller than .03 microns will effectively be trapped, including viruses and combustion smoke.

For people looking to improve the quality of the air within their home, using a HEPA Air Purifier is an excellent option. After all, dirty air can cause health issues for you, especially if you already have asthma or allergies.

2. Electronic Cleaners (Ionic)

Utilizing electrostatic attraction, electronic air cleaners give particles an electrical charge and trap them on collection plates or cause them to fall from the air and land on surfaces to be cleaned up with a dusting cloth.

Ion generators disperse ions into the air, charging the particles, which then fall to nearby surfaces. Electrostatic precipitators draw in air and charge the particles, which then collect on oppositely charged plates.

Ionic air purifiers have a few benefits over traditional air purifiers. The first is ease of use and cost effectiveness. There are no filters to change and the unit uses less energy than a typical air purifier. They might not be as effective as a filtered purifier but still very useful technology.

You can buy air purifiers that will have this technology included so you can have both filter and ionic purifier in one.

3. Gas-Phase (Charcoal) Air Filters

These air cleaners use a sorbent, such as activated charcoal, to absorb gaseous contaminants and odors. While they won’t remove all types of gaseous pollutants from your air, they will effectively remove those that they are specifically designed to eliminate.

You can buy air purifiers that will have this technology included so it will give you another layer of protection for your home.

4. UVGI Cleaners

UVGI stands for Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation and these Ultraviolet Rays will destroy biological contaminants, such as

  • bacteria,
  • viruses,
  • mold spores
  • and pollen.

These air cleaners are available as stand-alone lamps or they can be installed in your HVAC system to destroy biological pollutants as they enter the system through return air ducts.

A good air purifier should have this UVGI installed on the machine to give you another layer of protection in your home.

5. HVAC (furnace)

The air filter in your furnace is often overlooked, but its contribution to your indoor air quality and the efficiency of your HVAC system can’t be overstated. In addition to protecting your furnace and improving its efficiency, your air filter also help to improve your indoor air quality.

Particles in the typical home include dust mitespollenmoldpet dander and bacteria. Your furnace filter traps many of these particles to help you breathe easier and prevent allergy and asthma attacks.

6. PlasmaWave Technology (new)

It Generates and Releases thousands of negatively and positively charged ions which combine with water vapor in the air to form hydroxyls. These hydroxyls neutralize airborne viruses, bacteria, chemical odors, and gases using zero ozone. (1)

7. Air Purifier Humidifier

Dry and Dirty air can cause a number of health problems, ranging from merely annoying, such as dry eyes or sinus problems, to quite dangerous, such as the triggering of an asthma attack or similar serious breathing problem.

Therefore, the purchase of a quality Air Purifier Humidifier can have some significant health benefits as well as provide a better quality of life and a more pleasant indoor living environment.
